JURA CAPELA
Director, Screenwriter and Producer
Born in Recife and based in Olinda, Jura Capela has been working in film and visual arts since the late 1990s., building a filmography marked by aesthetic experimentation, dialogue with Brazilian culture, and a consistent presence at festivals and exhibition circuits in Brazil and abroad.
He was part of artistic groups in Pernambuco such as Canal 03 (photography and video) and the TelephoneColorido collective, with which he co-directed the short film Resgate Cultural – O Filme (2001), awarded at several national festivals. In the field of visual arts, he presented exhibitions such as Estéreo (Joaquim Nabuco Foundation – FUNDAJ, Recife, 2000) and Quebrem um Ovo (45th Pernambuco Visual Arts Salon, 2003), and participated in the 47th Pernambuco Visual Arts Salon with the installation Onde o Mar se Arrebenta (2011).
Throughout his career, he has collaborated in cinematography and production on films by several filmmakers of his generation. He is also the creator of the Sapo Cururu Film Festival, held between 2005 and 2012 in the cities of Olinda and Recife, establishing himself as an active figure in the development and dissemination of independent cinema.
His filmography includes the experimental short Copo de Leite (2004), the co-direction of the documentary medium-length film Shenberguianas (2005), and the direction of three feature films: Paranã-Puca – Onde o Mar se Arrebenta(2010), winner of the Redentor Trophy for Best Film in the Novos Rumos section at the Rio Film Festival; the musical film Jardim Atlântico (2012), screened at the 36th São Paulo International Film Festival and commercially distributed in several Brazilian capitals; and A Serpente (2016), an adaptation of a work by Nelson Rodrigues, screened at the Rio Film Festival and awarded at the 20th Luso-Brazilian Film Festival in Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal.
In 2022, he directed the feature-length documentary Mangue Bit, about the Brazilian music scene of the 1990s. The film participated in numerous national and international festivals, received multiple awards, and had commercial theatrical distribution in several regions of Brazil, reaffirming the reach of his work with audiences.
In 2025, he directed the feature film Palco Cama, expanding his cinematic research and consolidating a career marked by continuous filmmaking, a diversity of formats, and consistent circulation within the Brazilian cultural and audiovisual circuit.

Diretor, roteirista e produtor
Nascida em Recife e radicada em Olinda, Jura Capela atua no cinema e nas artes visuais desde do final dos anos 90, construindo uma filmografia marcada pela experimentação estética, pelo diálogo com a cultura brasileira e por uma presença constante em festivais e circuitos de exibição no Brasil e no exterior.
Integrou grupos artísticos em Pernambuco, como o Canal 03 (fotografia e vídeo) e o coletivo TelephoneColorido, com o qual co-dirigiu o curta-metragem Resgate Cultural – O Filme (2001), premiado em diversos festivais nacionais. No campo das artes visuais, realizou exposições como Estéreo (Fundação Joaquim Nabuco – FUNDAJ, Recife, 2000) e Quebrem um Ovo (45º Salão de Artes Plásticas de Pernambuco, 2003), além de participar do 47º Salão de Artes Plásticas de Pernambuco com a instalação Onde o Mar se Arrebenta (2011).
Ao longo de sua trajetória, colaborou na direção de fotografia e na produção de filmes de diversos cineastas de sua geração. É também idealizador do Festival de Cinema Sapo Cururu, realizado entre 2005 e 2012 nas cidades de Olinda e Recife, consolidando-se como agente ativo na formação e difusão do cinema independente.
Sua filmografia reúne o curta experimental Copo de Leite (2004), a co-direção do média-metragem documental Shenberguianas (2005) e a direção de três longas-metragens: Paranã-Puca – Onde o Mar se Arrebenta (2010), vencedor do Troféu Redentor de Melhor Filme na mostra Novos Rumos do Festival do Rio; o filme-musical Jardim Atlântico(2012), exibido na 36ª Mostra Internacional de Cinema de São Paulo e distribuído comercialmente em diversas capitais brasileiras; e A Serpente (2016), adaptação da obra de Nelson Rodrigues, exibida no Festival do Rio e premiada no XX Festival de Cinema Luso-Brasileiro de Santa Maria da Feira, em Portugal.
Em 2022, dirigiu o longa-documentário Mangue Bit, sobre a cena musical brasileira dos anos 1990. O filme participou de inúmeros festivais nacionais e internacionais, conquistando diversos prêmios, e teve distribuição comercial em salas de cinema de várias regiões do Brasil, reafirmando o alcance de sua obra junto ao público.
Em 2025, realiza o longa-metragem Palco Cama, ampliando sua pesquisa cinematográfica e consolidando uma trajetória marcada pela realização contínua de filmes, pela diversidade de formatos e pela circulação consistente no circuito cultural e audiovisual brasileiro.
